Life at Puerta

Life is bumping at Puerta!!! We've just come down from an incredible retreat season and are recalibrating as we gear up for Echo in July, our three day off grid life altering experience.

The farms are springing back from dry season and the land is waking up. The rain has begun and the garden is responding lots of new growth, bird activity and the symphony of insects. We'll be doing our annual rainy season planting end of the month which will supplement the already thriving fruit trees, medicinal and herb garden and plots. Join us for the planting!!! Our Farmacy is also thriving and our in house greenthumb, Lady Greenthumbs just shared a bit about her experience working with our Farmacy

This past week, ‪#‎VidaFarm‬ broke soil at our local grade school, Cecudi Montes De Oro, for Dia Del Agricultor. We planted clippings of katuk, spinach, jamaica and more. The kids were all smiles as they learned about the growing process while planting seeds. It was a special day for all.

It's Mango Madness at Puerta! Vida Foods is in full production as mango trees are dripping with fruit. This year, we've got artisanal batches of vinegar, dried fruit, jams and more in addition to crates and crates of fresh mangos for sale at market.

We understand not everyone will live here full time and because of this, building a home at Puerta can become an income generating property.  For community members, we offer the flexibility to rent out homes when not in use, while enjoying resort style living. Homes are managed by our staff and rented when vacant using our booking and reservation system.  We've got a strong retreat and hospitality business with an influx of rental opportunities on deck. As wellness is the center-point of Puerta and the concept behind Abundant Living, each home features customizable food garden options as well.

It's an exciting time for the Puerta project with a focus on our Wellness Centerpiece, thriving retreat and hospitality business, theatre works, weddings and somore down the pipeline.

Progress Update

It’s been two months since we last updated the Vida Journal with our construction progress and the work has produced incredible results.

The pool install is complete and its already yielded hours of jungle cool-down for our guests and visitors.

We’ve created an array of strategically curated nooks through a massive landscaping and aesthetic overhaul to experience the land, views and flora/fauna of Puerta A La Vida.

The main centerpiece Rancho is now fully furnished housing The Tardy Rooster restaurant, showers, pool and fire pit. The restaurant kitchen now features state-of-the-art equipment allowing us to provide organic and specialty meals for groups of 100 people and more. In addition to the kitchen facilities, the Rancho cafeteria seating with expansive views offers an intimate and engaging dining experience.

The newly built bamboo entrance distinguishes the property and one can expect to be greeted by a variety of native trees and neighboring livestock.

Puerta a la Vida visitors and teachers in the wellness space, coaches and healers, top doctors and entrepreneurs have recently showcased their programming here where the land immerses all in nature, inner-peace and expansion. Our Rancho guest rooms and Vida Village glamping accommodations has granted all those that visit a way to experience the magic that is Puerta a la Vida.

With fully functioning water and electric flowing through the property, we’re currently in the next phase of infrastructure build out. The build for our first homes in the community is about to commence and last but not least, our expanded Organic farm and gardens are lusher than ever. We look forward to preparing a fresh farm-to-table meal for you soon!

Costa Rica's Luxury Property Market is Vibrant

http://www.globalpropertyguide.com/Latin-America/Costa-Rica

The Costa Rican housing market had seen steady improvements during the period 2012-13, thanks to the strengthening economy and housing market in the United States. Due to the absence of official house price statistics, it is hard to assess the movements of house prices. However, local property experts affirm that median condominium and home prices rose during 2012 and the first half of 2013, while prices for low-end properties dropped significantly over the same period.

According to an article by Michael Klein published in the World Property Channel, over the past few years: The luxury market continues to see robust growth as foreign homebuyers flock into the domestic market.

Property prices in Costa Rica vary considerably, depending on size and location. The Central Valley, the greater metropolitan area (including San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Escazú) where most of the nation’s businesses are located, and along the Pacific coast are home to some of the most expensive and fastest-selling properties in Costa Rica. On the other hand, the least expensive properties can be found in new developments in the Costa Rica’s southern region, such as the Osa Peninsula.

Housing market outlook
The Costa Rican property market is expected to continue its positive growth in 2014, according to local property experts like CRREC and Re/Max Ocean Surf.

This is an exciting time for real estate in Costa Rica and for my growing team. Buyer confidence is up, and this definitely is having a positive effect on our market. Moreover, as the overall global housing market improves, our client base grows since Costa Rica attracts buyers from around the world due to its foreigner friendly property laws and high standard of living," said Simmons.

Costa Rica has some of the best housing stock in Latin America.   Less than 10% is considered to be in bad condition. 74% the total housing stock is owner-occupied, and 17% is rented.

The economy was estimated to have expanded by 3.5% in 2013, after registering real GDP growth rates of 5.1% in 2012, 4.4% in 2011, and 5% in 2010, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The economy is projected to expand by 3.8% in 2014.

Foreign investors buoy the housing market
Foreign homebuyers from the United States are driving up property demand in Costa Rica. “Higher median prices in the USA are now driving buyer interest in higher priced and luxury real estate properties, particularly for ocean view, beachfront, and near beach properties,” said Chris Simmons, the founder of Re/Max Ocean Surf. “Buyers from hot markets in the USA like California and Florida see Costa Rica as offering great value in comparison to similar beach real estate in the United States. We still have luxury condos for under $200 per square foot, pricing that is rare in the USA,” Simmons added.

There has also been increased interest from Canadian and European buyers. During the end of 2013, there is about 13% increase in the number of European investors compared to the same period last year, according to Costa Rica Real Estate (CRREC), one of the leading real estate firms in the country. While the majority of the total real estate transactions in 2013 still come from the United States, there is a noticeable increase in the number of Canadians buyers.

"We find that with the strong Canadian dollar, more Canadians are looking outside their homeland for investment with the promise of affordable living in paradise and a great escape from winter`s gripe,” said Brett Elliott, CEO of CRREC.

Aside from its scenic beauty and lower cost of living, many Costa Ricans, foreign investors and High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) are increasing being attracted to invest in the property market mainly because foreigners are entitled to the same ownership rights as Costa Rican citizens and there are no property taxes and no residency restrictions.

A Food Forest is Born!

The Puerta a la Vida team is thrilled to announce that our food has arrived! We have just completed an amazing planting of Fruit Trees, Superfoods, Medicinal plants, and our Garden Beds.  This food will feed the Residents of our Community, Guests of the Wellness Retreat Center,  and all of the Visitors that come through our doors. It will also serve as the foundation of our Health & Wellness education program.

Imagine walking through the gardens and picking your lunch, collecting some fresh herbs for a tea, or gathering fruit for a super food smoothie - okay forget the imagine part, just come visit!

Our Latest Initiatives:

  • A Nutritional Education Program & farm tours with the local schools in our area
  • Miramar's first women's cooperative for Artesenal Production
  • VIDA Foods - Dehydrated Mangos, Chutneys, Jams and Mango Mud Masks. All created from the 600 Mango trees on the property!

This could not have happened without the help of Stephen Brooks, Paul Zink, Jasona Randeau, Brooke Coleman and the entire Puerta a la Vida team - who were onsite sunrise to sunset planting and making the magic happen. A big big thank you!

Development Progress

We've been hard at work on the ground and wanted to share some of the latest developments.

Our Community Center Gardens and Entrance area earthworks are well under way! With green season here, we are getting ready to plant! We want our guests and residents to be assured they have an abundant supply of organic food.

We have also just completed the bidding for our next stage of infrastructure, and will be preparing to lay the underground electricity, fiber optic, and water. This supplements the current water & electric we have that are overground and makes the community come to life more and more each day.

Architectural Visioning at Puerta a la Vida

The philosophy and methodology behind creating a community of cohesive and efficient architecture is an art form in an of itself. Architect Daniel Cisneros is one of the creative talents re-thinking the types of spaces we build at Puerta a la Vida. With a focus on natural materials, open spaces, modular design, passive systems, low environmental impact, functionality, and small footprints - Daniel has paved a way for residents to envision their dream home in the tropics. A home doesn't have to be enormous to be beautiful - but it does have to be of a certain quality, a certain warmth, and sensibility. We are grateful to have architects like Daniel Cisneros and his firm PARQ, hard at work shaping the future for Puerta a la Vida. Click the link to view the design deck from PARQ: PARQ_PLV Design
